Maybe you’ve followed the advice about matching your shoes to your belt, but how about matching your braces to your… eyes? Braces colors for adults may not be widely used, but when it comes to deciding what your braces will look like, you do have options.

Can adults get braces?

Adults can certainly get braces. Teeth are not fixed in your lifetime. Even if you had years of braces when you were younger, an injury to the mouth or passing time can move your teeth around. Sometimes it’s sleeping consistently on one side that can cause pressure over time to move your teeth, and sometimes it’s another dental issue, like bruxism, that changes your bite.

For whatever reason, if your bite becomes off, other complications can arise. A poorly-aligned bite can cause chipped or cracked teeth. Some teeth may become wedged more tightly together, making cleaning your teeth a challenge (and cavities a greater possibility!).

If you find yourself needing braces as an adult, there are two main options to choose from.

Types of braces for adults

When straightening your teeth as an adult, you have two main options for braces: invisible braces and standard metal braces.

When it comes to choosing which is best for you, there are three things you’ll consider: function, cost, and appearance.

Invisible braces for adults

For adults who prefer more discretion, invisible braces (most commonly called Invisalign but also available in other brands) are an option. These clear plastic aligners snap onto teeth and are worn all day and night. You remove them to eat and brush.

These braces can gradually move teeth into proper alignment and you can swap out aligner trays without a visit to the orthodontist. Invisible braces work best for minor bite correction. They do not fix major gaps in teeth, and they are not able to dramatically move your teeth.

As you might expect, invisible braces cost more than metal braces and are not typically covered by insurance. You can use Invisalign’s cost calculator to get an estimate of cost.

In terms of appearance, invisible braces are the more discreet of the two options. While not technically “invisible,” they can be subtle enough that many people don’t notice you have them.

Metal braces

Metal braces are traditional braces that you’re likely familiar with. They consist of metal brackets that encircle your molars and are cemented to the outside of your teeth. These brackets connect with a wire that increases in thickness as your teeth begin to move. Rubber bands hold the wire to the brackets on the outside of your teeth.

If you have a significant bite correction or large gaps in your teeth, metal braces may be the best option. They can move teeth dramatically to restore a beautiful, even smile.

The cost of metal braces varies depending on where you live and the orthodontist you choose. Insurance will likely cover at least a portion of the cost, which may make metal braces more affordable.

Lingual braces are another less common type of bite correction. With these, brackets are placed on the inside of your teeth. These are actually the most invisible types of braces. While this sounds like a perfect solution for bite correction and discretion as an adult, lingual braces are more difficult to place and may not work for all types of bite correction.

Ceramic braces are another way to get a subtler look. The brackets are made of ceramic instead of metal and closely match your tooth color. These perform in the same way as metal braces, but they are also usually more expensive and may not be covered by insurance.

What are different braces colors for adults?

If you do opt for metal braces for significant bite correction, you will need to think about the color of the rubber bands that secure the wire to the bracket. These rubber bands are visible to any degree that you want them to be.

Note too that choosing braces colors for adults does not have to be confined to a boring, plain rubber band. These rubber bands – also referred to as elastic ligatures – come in nearly any color you can think of. As you will get them swapped out every six to eight weeks, you can personalize your braces every couple months.

But which braces color combinations might work best for you? Here are a few braces color ideas to try.

  1. Match your skin tone: If you have darker skin, choose jewel tones. Lighter skin may look best with pale or pastel tones.
  2. Match your eye color: Generally, one color is enhanced by adding its opposite on the color wheel. So green eyes pop with reds and oranges. Blue eyes will stand out with lilac and pink.
  3. Consider the color of your teeth: Teeth with a yellowish tint may look even more yellow with white elastic ligatures. Choose darker colors to make your teeth appear whiter.
  4. Use your favorite color: Got a favorite color that is present in all parts of your life? Consider using that color for your rubber bands, too.
  5. Be festive: Choose red, white, and pink for Valentine’s Day, orange and black for Halloween, or holiday colors for whichever holiday you celebrate in the winter.
  6. Show your team spirit: Match rubber bands to your favorite team, no matter which season it is.
  7. Get sparkly: Some elastics manufacturers offer silver, gold, and other metallic options, perfect for parties and special events.

If color is not for you, then consider getting elastics that match the braces themselves, like white, grey, or silver. If you are tempted to choose clear elastics, note that they may be susceptible to staining between appointments. That means if you drink coffee or other staining beverages, this may be a concern.
